Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Gully Boy, is making a lot of buzz and is appreciated by both fans and critics. The film which is loosely based and inspired from Mumbai based street rappers Divine and Naezy, follows the journey of a young man who goes from slum to stardom. The film is well directed and is considered to be one of the best performances of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. The hoodie worn by Ranveer Singh in Gully Boy is pretty trending now, but did you know that the costume designers of the film, Arjun Bhasin & Poornamrita Singh, also got some costumes from Mumbai’s chor bazaar and Bangkok’s flea market. The filmmakers wanted to give Ranveer a unique look with no distactions of heavy chains and all that shiny blings people usually associate with Hip Hop and rappers.

Zoya Akhtar was pretty clear about her vision for the film and wanted to focus only on the characters and slums of Mumbai, so she didn’t show the cliche Mumbai locations, beaches, Gate way of India. Zoya focused on the narrow streets of the slum the aerial shots of the slums are beautiful as well.

Gully Boy has a total of 18 songs but what’s more fascinating is the fact that the music and songs is a work of 54 talented artists. Ranveer Singh has rapped a few songs himself while Divine spits the lyrics of Azaadi with such ease and flow.

You may have heard it in some interviews from Bollywood stars that one of the thing that Hollywood has and Bollywood doesn’t is the casting directors. However, Gully Boy disapproves it. Gully Boy’s casting was done by Karan Mally and Nandini Shrikent. A casting director’s job is to pick the right actors who can play the characters in the film, and Gully Boy shows good casting because every character in the film stands out. Either’s Ranveer’s Father played by Vijay Raj or his mentor Sher played by Siddhant Chaturvedi, they all seem to be born to play those characters.

However, when she was editing the film Dil Dhadakne Do, someone showed Zoya Aafat, a song by Naezy. Zoya was blown away with this new street rap that was slowly growing in slums of Mumbai and that’s when she decided to take it forward and introduce the story of Divine and Naezy and the mumbai rap to whole world with the film Gully Boy.
