Gully Boy is not in the top 10 shortlisted films for Oscar’s Best Internation Feature Films – did it really have a chance to win an oscar?
After making much buzz for India’s official entry for Oscar’s Best International Feature Film this year, Gully Boy is out of the race now as Oscar published it’s latest list of shortlisted top 10 films for 92nd Oscar awards.
Now while the fans of Gully Boy are sad to heart the news, other Bollywood fans and film critics are criticizing Film Federation of India for choosing Gully Boy over other more deserving films like Article 15.
#gullyboy is out of Oscar race. Anyways it had 0% chance of winning against bong joon-ho’s masterpiece parasite. pic.twitter.com/O7vMDiyNsU— hardik parmar (@_hardik98) December 17, 2019
Gully is definitely a masterpiece by acclaimed director Zoya Akhtar. Seeing a story of an underdog rapper with authentic locations, great screenplay, costumes was something audiences and critics enjoyed. The film’s entire cast got praised for their acting skills and the soul of the film, it’s music, made huge impact on Indian audience.
However no one can deny the fact that the movie seemed to be inspired from Hollywood’s 8 Mile featuring world’s best rapper Eminem and his song, Loose Yourself, in the movie did win an Oscar. But Zoya Akhtar claimed that Gully Boy was inspired and based on the life of Indian rappers Divine and Naezy.
While Indian music videos and songs are quickly crossing 100 million views on YouTube, Gully Boy’s only one song titled ‘Apna Time Aayega’ managed to cross 100 million. While the movie is definitely one of the best, Hollywood has seen it already in 8-Mile, was this the reason that Gully Boy is out of the race for Oscar win? Because it lacked an original story?
Also, Gully Boy is definitely a great film compared to other Indian films released this year but in Oscar it competed with International cinema by South Korea (film named Parasite) and Spain (film named Pain and Glory).
See what Twitterati are saying about Gully Boy after it is out of Oscars.
Its ok if #GullyBoy is out of the race… for me Gully Boy was always a GOOD film and never a GREAT FILM it was a good film because of Ranveer Singh Performance… No doubt media over hyped it, deserving film was #Tumbbad— Rohit Jaiswal (@rohitjswl01) December 17, 2019
India’s official entry #GullyBoy is out of oscar race and this happens when you send an average saga just because of nepotism and big stars . #superdeluxe , #AndhaDhun or #Tumbaad could have won us an oscar !!!!— Rahul verma (@RahulVerma4860) December 17, 2019
I wrote in my column in September India entry #GullyBoy doesn’t stand a chance at Oscars because it is not original (see photo). I was right and it is out of Oscars race. In 2017 they also sent an obviously plagiarised film with Newton. 🤦🏻♂️ pic.twitter.com/gV63oj7L9s— Asjad Nazir (@asjadnazir) December 17, 2019
People were really expecting #GullyBoy to make it? Please go back and look at what else the world made in 2019! Even the other films made in India, for that matter. Every movie that has slum in it doesn’t have to go to the Oscars.— BombayBee (@ashwiniz) December 17, 2019
Kanagana Ranaut’s sister also took a dig at Gully Boy.
This film is based on Hollywood film 8 Mile, yahan ke movie mafia chatukar critics ke chaatne se kya hota hai, it’s not original content like Uri and Manikarnika, why Hollywood will give award to a film which is copied from their film ? pic.twitter.com/vSVeVHVaUB— Rangoli Chandel (@Rangoli_A) December 17, 2019
