What could be the connection between Bollywood’s fine actor Pankaj Tripathi and Indian Shehnai maestro Ustaad Bismillah Khan sahab – many of you are wondering about that now, right? Well they weren’t related or knew each other at all, but there was a little connection from Pankaj Tripathi’s side.
In an interview to Neelesh Mishra in his interview series Slow, Pankaj told a story about how once he listened to Ustaad Bismillah Khan’s Shehnani in his early teen years. Among many elderly people and people who knew about shehnai were in that concert, and Pankaj Tripathi was one of the few young people, who didn’t understood a single bit of shehnai but loved every bit of it too.
Years passed and Pankaj Tripathi became an actor. One morning when he was shooting and staying in a hotel room, he read the bad news of Ustaad Bismillah Khan leaving the world and started crying right there at the door of the hotel room.
The fine actor got teary eyes remembering the incident and talking about this gem of India, Ustaad Bismillah Khan, during the interview as well.
